The Bavarians' festive feel

The German Restaurant at Galle Face Court is a location in Colombo known to pretty much any food lover and can even be considered a landmark in the city by the sea.

And since July 1, this year, with a change in management having taken place, the restaurant was given a new look and name too and thus The Bavarian German Restaurant & Pub came in to being. "We always wanted to own a bar and pub and we are new to this trade," said Niluka Mendis, Director, The Bavarian, while her brother Chavan Mendis handles the operation side of things. "It's just an interest and it's going pretty good," Niluka quipped.

The restaurant has been dressed up for the season giving it a warm Christmassy feel with the decor that has been put up. So The Bavarian might be just the place you would want to be at with your family and friends during this season.

In fact, they will be having a carvery which will include these simply mouth watering dishes, so take note! Roast Turkey with Cranberry Sauce, Herb Roast Leg of Lamb with Mint Sauce, Slow Roast Australian Prime Rib with a Parmesan and Mustard Crust, Honey Roast Pork with a Homemade Gravy along with soups and starters... Yes! I bet your mouth is watering right about now, just picturing these delectable meats!

Oktoberfest is a big deal at The Bavarian and in fact, they had introduced a new menu during the time. Niluka also said that customers can expect a special menu on 31st Night 2008!

The restaurant being very well known, the change in management has not affected them in the least, but has in fact been very positive, say Niluka and Chavan. And among the popular dishes prepared by Lal Kodituwakku, the Head Chef, are the Pork Knuckle, Steaks, Vienna Schnitzel, Cordon Bleu and Goulash. Curry Ketchup and various types of mustards that are great accompaniments to German dishes are brought down from Germany itself and served to the table along with your meal and they certainly do enhance your meal. Having tried out the Vienna Schnitzel, made with succulent and soft pork, I can tell you that the sweet mustard really made a difference to my meal. In addition, ingredients like the batter mix, is also brought down from Germany, therefore resulting in "a change in the flavour," of the food, say Niluka and Chavan.

The restaurant still has its trademark cosy feel and of course those massive portions and not forgetting their large menu and reasonable prices. In addition to all this, live music is played on Friday nights and at the moment Christmas songs are in the air too. They also have a comprehensive beverage list which include a number of mocktails like the Virgin Pina Colada, Bloody Shame and the Flaming Cinderella, to name a few, along with a variety of beers including the well known German beer, Becks.

Yes, I know, when you think about Colombo, one of the first things that come into mind is that headache of parking but that should not be a worry in the least, as there is ample parking along with valet parking.
The Bavarian German Restaurant & Pub is situated at 11, Galle Face Court 2, Colombo 3 and open 365 days a year. They are open for lunch between 12 and 3pm and for dinner between 6 and 11pm and then on Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm to 12mn. For further details or to make a reservation, you can call them on 2307056 or 2421577.
