The novel Animal Farm brings new meaning to the phrase ‘hogging the limelight’ when a group of pigs takes control of a small farmyard community. So with Elizabeth Moir School’s new stage production Animal Farm, being brought to life on February 13 and 14, at 7.30pm, at the Lionel Wendt, this well-known political allegory comes vividly to life.
When the animals of Manor Farm decide to rebel against their human leaders and govern themselves, they think it is the start of a better life. Their dream is of a world where all animals are equal and all property is shared, where each individual works towards the common good.
However, the pigs soon become hungry for their creature comforts and gradually assume power over the new order. Children will delight with the colourful animal costumes of this modern fairy tale, whilst an older audience will be able to appreciate the more serious ramifications of the analogy between the farm and the communist government in Russia during the revolution.
It is a masterful retelling of the process and outcomes of this immense social, political and ideological upheaval. Humorous yet poignant, the story explores behaviour and power and reveals that too much power can lead to corruption and abuse.
The play promises to be enthralling and enlightening and you should not miss the opportunity to watch this classic tale retold on the stage. Angeleen Renker, Anithra Basnayake and Emily Hayward will be playing the leading pigs Napoleon, Snowball and Squealer.
The character of Mr Jones, the negligent farmer, will be immortalised by Inshard Haqque. The heroic Boxer will be played by Ashley Karunarajah, the maternal Clover by Sabrina Ghouse and the ditzy Mollie by Amelia Ball. Other noteworthy performances are given by Tariq-Ur Rahman as the sarcastic donkey Benjamin and Tamara Imboden as a startlingly realistic cat. The costumes are done by Rishard of Raheem’s Tailors.
