Dialog helps IT Education of underprivileged children in Hatamuna

Dialog Telekom is helping facilitate the IT Education of underprivileged children in a rural village by donating a Computer Learning Centre. Hundreds of school children who attend Sri Dharmodaya Sunday School of Sri Gangarama Viharaya, Hatamuna in Polonnaruwa district will be benefited by this donation, the company said last week.

This project was initiated by a concept of Ven. Allawwe Gnanawasa, chief incumbent of Sri Gangarama Viharaya situated at Hatamuna, a very remote village in Hinguragkgoda. The priest had contemplated establishing a computer centre for the village children for a considerable period of time and his vision became a reality when Dialog offered to provide five new computers and other furniture to set up a computer centre at the temple premises.

The handing over ceremony of this newly built computer learning centre was held last month. Speaking at the ceremony, Ven. Liyangaswagure Devananda, former professor of Sanskrit at Anuradhapura Buddha Shrawaka University and Chief Prelate of Alahara Bakamuna region said, providing facilities to disseminate IT knowledge to the children of such remote areas should be highly appreciated.

“There are many job opportunities in the job market nowadays . But the problem is most of the time you do not find skilled persons to meet the demand. To fulfill this requirement of the job market, the children of the next generation are to be empowered with knowledge of new technology. Though many people speak about the negative side of Internet and modern technology, we should accept the fact that there are many positive aspects of such technology. When we consider the results of Advanced Level Examination last year, more village children have came up with flying colours. With the new technology, it is hoped that these children in this underprivileged area would also succeed in the near future.” Ms Apsara Wijayawardene, Head, Supply Chain Management at Dialog Telekom, said “We provide technology to all Sri Lankans irrespective of their status to empower and enrich their lives. The intention behind this donation is to enrich the lives of underprivileged children in this rural area.”

Villager D.G Premawansa said they were farmers having financial difficulties. “We are not in a position to afford sending our children to do Computer Courses. But now we have a computer learning centre in our own village. We are very grateful to Dialog Telekom for giving a helping hand to our children.”

The Change Trust Fund was established in 1999 and is Dialog Telekom’s key community service initiative.
