Govt. MP evades arrest in abduction case

By Damith Wickramasekera

Police investigating the alleged abduction of a boy are yet to trace the suspect in this case -- UPFA Gampaha district MP Sarana Gunawardena -- though a local court has issued an arrest warrant.

A senior police officer said two teams had been deployed to trace the MP and the airport had been alerted to prevent the MP from leaving the country. Mr. Gunawardena, a wealthy bus owner, is alleged to have abducted a 12-year-old boy from his house after hitting the child’s father with the pistol. The boy was released after he was kept locked up in a room for two hours, police said.

The incident had taken place after the boy’s father who had worked as a driver for the suspect switched jobs to work for UPFA candidate Prasanna Ranatunga.

Shortly after the incident, the MP claimed that the person involved in the alleged abduction was someone who looked like him, and that it was a clear case of mistaken identity.

However, police said they had made several requests for the MP to appear at the local police station but he had failed to turn up.

Attanagalla Magistrate I.J.D Liyanage on Friday issued a warrant for the MP’s arrest and ordered the police to produce him in court as early as possible.
