Mrs. Herath, in her address, said the Lanka Mahila Samithi was inaugurated in 1930, by Dr. Mary Rutnum, long before International Women's Day was declared. She added that ever since, it has rendered yeoman service to uplift the living conditions of rural women by empowering them socially and economically.

The Guest Speaker Ms. Sunila Mendis outlined the progress made by rural women with the support of projects undertaken by successive governments in post- independence Sri Lanka.

However, she said, there is still much to be desired in the task of empowering women in Sri Lanka as violence against women and sexual abuse of women and girl children are on the rise.

Two other members addressed the meeting on the progress of projects undertaken and the needs of rural women.
