Sri Lankan doctor in Australia dies in car accident

A Sri Lankan-born doctor based in Sydney, Australia, was killed in a car accident in western New South Wales on Monday, June 22.

Dr. Nagaruban Arumugam, 32, a paediatric registrar attached to the Dubbo Base Hospital, was on his way back home after a busy weekend during which he had saved the lives of at least two patients, one a prematurely born infant and the other a leukemia patient.

At Thursday’s Parliamentary sittings in Canberra, Member of Parliament Mark Coulton paid tribute to Dr. Arumugam, and spoke of his dedication to the people of western New South Wales.

According to Dubbo Hospital paediatrics head Dr. Dominic Fitzgerald, Dr Arumugam, who had worked in emergency paediatric, maternity and labour wards, was at the midpoint in his training to become a specialist.

Dr. Arumugam, who was known as Ruban to friends and colleagues, came to Australia in the early nineties. A graduate of the University of New South Wales, he was well known for his exceptional clinical skills and great compassion for sick children.

Hundreds of mourners are expected tomorrow at the Macquarie Park Crematorium, in North Sydney, to bid farewell to the much-loved doctor.
