Get them going with male names!

In his letter (the Sunday Times, June 28) about the Yal Devi train, P.V.S. Rangan of Dehiwela asked why our trains were given female names.

I think I know the answer. Like our trains, our women take a long time to get ready for a journey. The result is that everyone is late.

I suggest we give our trains masculine gender names: Yal Raja, Uttara Raja, Udaya Raja, Samudra Raja, Ruhunu Kumara, Rajarata Rajjuruwo, Podi Banda, Udarata Banda.

I am sure that with these strong, manly names our trains will start setting out and arriving on schedule.

D. Gunasekera, Agalawatte
