Celebrations were high last Saturday as the Colombo British Council celebrated the 60th Anniversary, on Sri Lankan soil. The air of excitement filled every corner of the British Council.
To start with there was a Book Fair, which included some of the big names in the book world. Adults and children were busy at the book stalls choosing their favourite books. Organizers were very tactful in
organizing the celebrations catering to all the ages.
Meanwhile at one end of the British Council, there was a cookery demonstration by Mr. Hemalalindre Ranawaka, popularly known as 'Koluu'. It was a whole new experience for some kids as they were never allowed to go near a gas stove. Here they were allowed to cook, bake and mix things. They experienced how to make cup cakes and decorate them. When I spoke to a kid, she was overjoyed and told me about the experience she had.
The main sponsor for this programme was Singer Sri Lanka. Mas Tropical Food Products too played a vital role in organizing this event and making it a
success.
After a lunch break, there was the 'Grammar Quest 2009'. Out of 22 schools, five schools were selected for the Grand Final. They were Royal Institute, Royal College, Bishop's College, Musaeus College and Holy Family Convent.
It started at 1.30 p.m., with a warm welcome by the Quiz Master
Mr. Erange Ginige. Some parents as well as teachers were present to witness the event.
All the participants introduced themselves. Very clear instructions were given by the Quiz Master. The judges were introduced to all before it began.
The 'Grammar Quest' consisted of two rounds. At the end of the first round Holy Family Convent was leading.
There was an audience trivia to entertain the
audience. Those who were successful were presented with a lovely recycled paper notebook.
At the second round, although every team was working hard to top the list, Holy Family Convent walked away with the
trophy, scoring 123 points, while Bishop's College secured second place with 100 points. Royal Institute, Nugegoda Branch, was third with 87 points.
The Country Director delivered a short speech and gave away the trophies and the certificates to the winners as well as to all the participants.
The
Co-ordinators said that they are hoping to extend such
programmes to outstation schools too.
Amidst all this, I stole a little time to interview a parent who said that the organizers have done a great job and it really gave a good experience to a child.
Another team member said although they became third, he and his team mates really enjoyed the event and gained a wider experience.
All in all it was a day that everyone enjoyed.
