President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed the Inspector General of Police to crack down on the dissemination of child pornography through the internet.
It has been brought to the President’s notice that numerous overseas-based websites containing such material are available to local internet users.
According to a statement from the Government Information Service, “the availability, accessibility and volume of child pornography are of a disturbing magnitude”.
The statement adds that “the producers of child pornography try to avoid prosecution by distributing their material across national borders”.
The government is looking to introduce special legislation aimed at eliminating the social menace of child pornography.
The statement said the government will obtain the services of IT experts and state institutions possessing the technical knowhow to monitor such internet activity, locate servers that host such websites, track individuals and organised groups that post material on child pornography sites, and generally assist the law enforcement authorities in this regard. |
