Lalith Weeratunga re-elected to chair ICT Committee

For the second consecutive year, Secretary to the President, Lalith Weeratunga, was unanimously re-elected to chair the ICT Committee of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), said to be a very prestigious position.

Adding to this was the support extended by "member countries with high calibre in ICT like South Korea, India, Malaysia and Australia" which, according to the Chief Executive of Sri Lanka's Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), Reshan Dewapura, "corroborated that the international community has recognized the great strides Sri Lanka has made in ICT in several sectors under the e-Sri Lanka initiative".

An ICTA statement said the UNESCAP committee addresses issues relating to 'Integration of ICT-related issues in development policies, plans and programmes; Transfer and application of ICT at the regional and sub regional levels; Development of human and institutional capacity in the use of ICT and ICT applications for disaster risk reduction'.
