This article is part of a continuing series on the ‘Mahavamsa,’ the recorded chronicle of Sri Lankan history

1. Veediya Bandara, accepted the innocence of Samudradevi and tried to control himself. Once again, they began to spend their days happily. This calm and happiness, however did not last for long. There was a lot of gossip spreading involving Samudradevi and the young Portuguese commander. They brought disrepute. It is after hearing these stories, that Veediya Bandara turned furious. He began to suspect Samudradevi.

2. Thinking that Samudradevi brought dishonour on his good name, he was getting disgusted of her. He was contemplating. At times he thought it better to die, rather than suffer humiliation. As he went on thinking over and over regarding this issue, he could not bear the sight of Samudradevi. His anger knew no bounds. But at the same time he felt sorry for her too.

3. That was mainly because, Samudradevi preferred him – to Jaya Bandara at the very outset. Prince Veediya Bandara was now lost between two worlds. At times, he behaved like a madman. Gradually, he was getting extremely disgusted, and disturbed. Finally, he arrived at a decision. He spoke very lovingly to Samudradevi and showered a lot of affection on her. The queen too was happy to notice this sudden change in Veediya Bandara. One day, as evening approached, Prince Veediya Bandara suggested that they should go for a walk in the park.

4. She readily agreed. In a good mood, both of them left the palace. They entered the park, wandered about and enjoyed themselves as never before. Veediya Bandara took Samudradevi to the bank of the Diyawanna Oya, uttering words of love and affection, all the way. Samudradevi stopped at the bank, watching the rough waves. That day the water in the Diyawanna Oya had turned rather rough and the water had turned muddy. The water was almost fighting to scroll up its banks.

5. There were currents all over the Oya. They were breaking, allowing the muddy water to flow. Veediya Bandara was silently observing all this. His eyes turned to Samudradevi. She too looked at him and smiled. The Prince called Devi to where he was. She gave a pleasant smile and went close to him. She looked at the prince and noticed a change on his face. His eyes had turned red and he seemed to be in a rage.

6. "Why, Commander?" asked she in a soft voice. "You unfortunate lady, I loved you even more than
I loved myself. I risked my life, by fighting Jaya Bandara, for your sake.

But now, you have created an unpleasant and unholy atmosphere that ruins the reputation of our generation. Moreover, it is a slur on my honour. I just can't tolerate this. As such, this has to be erased completely. Somehow…

7. You lady, have to pay for all that, with your life. In a few moments, your life will be lost amidst these turbulent waves," continued Veediya Bandara.

Samudradevi sobbed, "Please have pity on me, dear Commander. I'm innocent. Please allow me to live," she begged. She fell at Veediya Bandara's feet and worshipped him. Veediya Bandara kept mum. In deep thought he was gazing at her.

8. Devi was weeping in sheer fear for her life. Veediya Bandara then spoke again. "Devi, you may be innocent of all these accusations.

But the bad rumours that have spread because of you are degrading. I don't think they would die down, as long as you, are alive. You unfortunate lady, let those accusations be right or wrong. I shall stick to my decision," concluded Veediya Bandara in a stern voice.
