Incessant rain proves a spoiler

Premier Tier ‘A’

Rain ruined the proceedings of the second day in most Premier Tier ‘A’ and ‘B’ cricket encounters due to overnight rain. There was play possible in only three of the 11 matches that were due to be played with the other eight matches being called off due to wet conditions underfoot.

The only match to be played in the morning session was the Premier Tier ‘A’ encounter between Chilaw Marians and Saracens SC at the Colts ground. Even this match had a delayed start with play starting only at 12 noon.

In this match Chilaw Marians resuming from their overnight score of 220 for 6 went on to make 305 with overnight batsman Janaka Gunaratne making a top score of 74. Saracens SC in their turn were 27 for 1.
The other two matches that were played was in the Premier Tier which was between Navy SC and Police at Welisara and BRC against Singha SC at the BRC ground. Both these matches got off after 2.00 p.m.
Police have already obtained a first inning lead over Navy SC at Welisara while BRC resuming from their overnight score of 44 for 3 ended the day on 139 for 5. This was in reply to Singha SC’s 176.

The opening day’s play of these matches saw some fine batting again by Upul Tharanga and Dinesh Chandimal in the match between NCC and traditional rivals SSC.

NCC skipper Tharanga made a 167 ball 95 with 11 boundaries and a six while Chandimal cracked a quick-fire 70 in just 75 balls which included ten boundaries. They were also associated in a 104 runs stand for the third wicket.
