APS - teacher training programme

The Academy of Professional Studies (APS) at Nugegoda, established in 1998 is a premier private institution for teacher training courses, with national and international registration and accreditation. APS is an accredited centre for Edexcel International of the United Kingdom jointly with Pearson Company of London to conduct London Tests of English (LTE) certificate courses for both children and adults.

The teacher Training Diploma Programmes offered by APS are registered with the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission under the Ministry of Vocational and Technical Training. Accreditation for APS Teacher Training Diploma Programmes is with Edexcel International of UK; and the International Standard Certificate of ISO 9001 - 2008 is awarded by SGC [UK] which regularly assesses the quality management system implemented at APS. In teacher training programmes APS primarily aims to provide professional training to teachers and would be teachers in English Language teaching and teaching selected subjects in English. Our forte is in primary school teacher training, which is a vital area in the educational development in Sri Lanka today.

The present batch of primary school teachers is the 21st batch and the registration is now in progress for the next batch of primary school teachers. Our training programme consists of 6 months of classroom course work and 3 months of teaching practice in schools under strict supervision. The other two teacher training courses now running include one for teachers in teaching English Language & Literature and the other for the teachers in Mathematics. The registration for teachers in Science & IT is now in progress for the new batches.

The academy's initial batch of students for primary school teacher training in the English medium was in 2004 and since then it has enrolled 21 batches up to March 2010. Of the 874 trainees enrolled up to date, 383 have successfully graduated from APS and are working in various schools, making their contribution to education in the country. As Sri Lanka decides to become a Knowledge Centre in South Asia under the government's new economic policy package, the shortage of professionally qualified English teachers for schools in the country, is indeed a severe a stumbling block for the steady progress of the Knowledge Economy of Sri Lanka.

The Academy with years of experience in teacher training is indeed alive to this pressing national need and is committed wholeheartedly to make its due contribution to teacher training, particularly to that of the primary schools sector in the country. In this important task the Academy is equally committed to maintaining the highest possible professional standard and give all trainees ready access to the latest knowledge base available internationally relevant to the subject area of the trainee.

The faculty members of the academy are highly qualified and competent, with years of professional experience, both nationally and internationally in their respective field of specialization. The Academy's quality assurance scheme provides continuous access of the Faculty members to all trainees. The APS prides itself in striving for excellence in education and training.
