Three police teams probe murder of accountant’s wife

By Damith Wickremasekera

Three police teams have been assigned to investigate the killing of Badrani Mallika Bandaranayake (68) of Punchi Borella on Wednesday. Mrs. Bandaranayake was killed around 5 in the morning when she had gone to the kitchen to pour tea for herself and her husband. The coroner’s report indicates that death was due to suffocation after pieces of cloth had been stuffed into the victim’s mouth, police said.
Police believe that the suspect must have been known to the Bandaranayake family and on being recognised by Mrs. Bandranayake had killed her.

The victim’s husband Tissa Bandaranayake, a Chartered Accountant, had lodged a complaint with the police three months ago regarding a robbery that had taken place in the house. Though the robbers had stolen money on that previous occasion, nothing had been stolen from the house this time, police said.
Mr. Bandaranayake had found his wife lying dead on the kitchen floor with her hands and feet tied and a stcking plaster covering her mouth. He had called the police around 7.30 am to complain of the murder, police said.
