Police choose to ignore MP’s abuse

There will be no inquiry into a complaint lodged with the police that Galle district Member of Parliament Nishantha Muthuhettigama had made abusive remarks against the officer in charge of a southern police station.

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (Administration) Gamini Nawaratna said the Inspector General of Police, N. K. Illangakoon, had received a complaint to this effect, but there was no decision to hold an inquiry. “This Member of Parliament has made similar remarks before, and we were not surprised,” he said.

It is alleged that the MP had made the abusive remarks during a demonstration early this week against the officer in charge of the Akmeemana police station. The Police Inspectors Association had lodged a complaint with the IGP.

Meanwhile, on Friday, it was reported that MP Muthuhettigama had made his two Ministerial Security Division (MSD) officers dismount their vehicle when one of the officers had used his mobile phone. It was later revealed that the officer had pulled out his phone to answer a call from a senior police officer.

Kandy city to be ‘redesigned’

Government is to introduce a Bill for the proposed development of Kandy town while protecting its historic value.

A senior official involved in the project told the Sunday Times that, under the proposed plan, priority would be to move the bus stands and relocate the market and the pavement hawkers away from the city.
He said that, under the proposed plan, commuters would only be picked or dropped off within the city, while the buses would not be permitted to park within the city.

“The city will be developed in a manner that visitors will be able to walk about in the city without hindrance, while the roads out of the city will be improved, so that the number of vehicles entering the city will be reduced”, he said.

Pavements within the city will be shaded over so that people walking around the city will be shielded from the elements, he said.

He said that Katugastota Road and William Gopallawa Mawatha will be converted into four-lane roads. The present market will be turned into a shopping area, while around the lake facilities will be provided for people to relax.
