Fully fledged Sports Complex in Kilinochchi

The Ministry of Sports, in accordance with the national sports policy, will lay the foundation stone for a fully fledged international sports stadium in Killinochchi next Wednesday. The upcoming sports complex which boasts to have three separate grounds is estimated to complete at a cost of Sri Lankan rupees 325 million.

According to the design, the complex will be able to hold practice sessions of all sports importantly cricket, rugby, football and athletics. An eight-lane 400 meter sprint strip in accordance to the international standards is set to emerge according to a communiqué released by the Ministry of Sports.
The complex will hold a combined capacity crowd of over 10000 spectators and will also include a swimming pool. The fully fledged sports complex coming up in Killinochchi will be the first of the nine complexes to be built in each of Sri Lanka’s provinces.

The Minister of Sports, Mahindananda Aluthgamage prior to the upcoming major project began a workshop to identify the talents of over 2500 sportspersons in Killinochchi area commencing yesterday. Identified individuals from this two-day workshop which ends today, will be included into respective pools of sports.

“We hope to revive sports in the northern region of Sri Lanka through these projects. The identified youngsters will be able to improve their skills and reach the national level from this programme. The upcoming sports complex will be a boon for them,” Minister Aluthgamage stated. The proposed sports complex is expected to complete within two years. President Mahinda Rajapaksa will lay the foundation stone for the sports complex.
