Seat belt law from Oct 1

Seats belts will be mandatory for drivers and front seat passengers of motor vehicles from October 1.
The regulations will also apply to lorries and coaches that are registered after October 1, according to the Motor Traffic (Seat Belts) regulations gazetted by Transport Minister Kumar Welgama.

Once the regulations come into operation, no person will be allowed to sell or offer for sale or have in his/her possession for sale, any vehicle which is not fitted with a body restraining seat belt.

Those exempted from wearing seat belts will include persons whose height does not exceed 1.5 metres as well as those with permanent disabilities. Such persons are required to obtain a medical certificate to prove they are unable to wear a seat belt.
