Statue of Olcott in New Jersey

The Ananda College Old Boys’ Association -East Coast (ACOBA-EC) will unveil a statue of Col. Henry Steele Olcott on September 10, in New Jersey in the grounds of the New Jersey Buddhist Vihara at 4299 Rt. 27 Franklin, New Jersey.

The statue, based on the Olcott Statue in the busiest street named after Henry Steele Olcott in Colombo, Sri Lanka, was sculpted by a Sri Lankan sculptor under the direction of Tilak Ranavirajah. The keynote address at the unveiling ceremony will be given by Professor J.B. Disanayaka.

The statue is a gesture and a tribute from the alumni from the 'Olcott Schools' of Sri Lanka, a group of more than 400 schools that originated from the Buddhist education revival movement championed by Colonel Henry Steele Olcott.

Dr. Wije Kottahachchi, President of the Ananda College alumni group in the US said it was a symbol of appreciation of a great American who was responsible for uplifting the culture & heritage of Sri Lanka from the yoke of British colonialism.

In the event of a Janaza

The Colombo Janaza & Welfare Society and the Maligawatte Janaza & Welfare Society will hold a seminar on Sunday September 11 titled, 'In the event of a Janaza' to discuss issues related to Muslim funerals.

The seminar will be held at Muslim Ladies' Study Circle at D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha, Colombo 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The 14th Annual General Meeting of the MBA Alumni Association of the University of Colombo was held on July 29 at the Sapphire Ballroom of Ceylon Continental Hotel, Colombo.

Lawyers promise an evening of fun and laughter

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will hold a concert "Neethi Kekulu 2011" next Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Tower Hall, Maradana from 6.30 p.m. onwards.

The annual concert is of lawyers' children and one the organisers say will be "full of singing, dancing and laughter". The event offers a raffle draw of an air ticket to Chennai, a digital camera and mobile phone with tickets priced at Rs. 300 each.

Kilinochchi schools get helping hand

Under a Korean Education Grant amounting to Rs 500 million, 13 schools in the Kilinochchi district will benefit with new class rooms, activity rooms as well as teachers quarters for some schools.

The donation was made by the Representative of the Korean International Co-operation Agency (KOICA) Cho San Chu to Secretary, Ministry of Education H.M.Gunasekera. Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena too was present on the occasion.

Weeramantry Centre holds Trusteeship programme

The Training for Trusteeship Programme 2011 is being conducted for the fourth consecutive year by the Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research (WICPER). This year's programme from Sept 4-11 at the Sanasa Education Campus, Kegalle will draw participants from countries in the South Asian region.

Social media networking, climate change policies, reforestation, volunteerism, conflict transformation and peace-building will all receive attention during this year's programme. Over the last three years, a large number of outstanding young leaders representing both the academia and young leaders' initiatives have benefitted immensely by participating in this programme, and subsequently have carried out various social advancement projects.

Little Tharul needs liver transplant

Tharul Methmina Peiris of No. 213, Saman Mawatha, Siddhamulla, Piliyandala, has been suffering from a serious liver ailment since birth. He is under the care of paediatrician Dr. Dilrukshi Ruberu and surgeon Dr. Sanjaya Abeygunasekera.

Tharul is required to undergo an urgent liver transplant if his life is to be saved. The transplant is to be done at Global Hospital in Chennai and Tharul's mother, Lakmali Peiris is the donor. The surgery costs Rs. eight million and his parents who have mortgaged their house are seeking the assistance of sympathetic donors to raise this sum.
