While Sri Lanka revives after a 30 year old war its also the ideal opportunity for the youth of Sri Lanka to contribute their heart and soul into doing what’s best for our nation.
Against this backdrop, the Rotaract Club of Colombo North introduces the inaugural ‘Youth Model United Nations Sri Lanka’ aimed at university students of the ages 18-30 years. The objective of which is to open the horizons of Sri Lankan youth to the realms of international relations. “The conference will bring together the cream of the university level students to debate on pressing issues of concern,” said Secretary General, Adhil Bakeer Markar, speaking a at media briefing. Adhil is one of the many experienced MUN campaigners in the committee.
The inaugural conference will host over 250 delegates from the Universities of Colombo, Moratuwa, Jaffna, Kelaniya, Open University, the South Eastern University, as well as from the University of Nottingham Malaysia and the University of Cambridge, UK. Thus the scope of the conference is immense, and aims to amalgamate the young minds to solve problems in the best possible way.
The conference is scheduled to be held on December 17-18, 2011, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, and is accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education of Sri Lanka, The United Nations, United Nations Volunteers, The Embassy of the United States of America as well as the Training for Trusteeship Programme of the Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research.

By having the Youth MUN we can continue to pursue our passion” he also added. The Model United Nations is indeed more than a few students playing diplomat, it is a platform to launch ideas to the world as all the resolutions that pass will make it’s way to the UN headquarters.
An interesting part of the programme – is the ‘GLOCAL’ concept which will explore the the Global and Local aspects and avenues of the venture.
As the world continues to be bullied by problems, ignorance on our part leads to a greater desolation. In this wake, the initiative taken by these youth under the theme ‘Respect rights, respecting lives’ stands for the true morals of humanity. With the right idea, right desire and the people, the Youth MUN hopes to kick of it’s inaugural session in style. |
