BriefRanil is my choiceWhen a person loses, or is down people tend to criticize or desert him. One person has to lose and it is upto the loser to take up defeat and correct his or her mistakes. But I still feel, the UNP has an able and honest leader. These are the points I most admire about the man.He is:(1) Honest (2) A gentleman (3) Patient (4) Able (5) A man of vision (6) Courageous (7) Patriotic (8) Truthful (9) Efficient (10) Experienced Forty two percent voted for the UNP inspite of the state machinery used against him, thuggery, rigging and the sympathy vote. Let us help him to build a clean party, and then only will people realize what their choice should be. Sidath Fernando Support himThe UNP as a single party got 42% of the votes against the SLFP, LSSP, CP, MEP, CWC, and the Muslim Congress. The UNP would have easily got 51% if not for organized rigging and thuggery. The sympathy after the bomb attack also played a major part. Now the dissidents, the disgruntled and the corrupt elements want to replace the UNP leader so they can join the bandwagon. They should never be taken back. The UNP is a strong party and its leader an honest person. Let us back him at the general election, so that we can make Sri Lanka a better place to live in. Patrick Jayawickrema We have a right to listen'Anduren Eliyata' or "From Darkness to Light" was the name of Soma Thera's programme on ITN and everybody crowded round the TV to listen to him - Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Not for long, alas, as he was "expelled" from the state TV for speaking the truth! The citizens who pay to maintain state TV were abruptly denied their right to listen to him.To deny the Buddha-word is to deny the Dhamma, the law of righteousness. This could have bitter results. It is not at all surprising that Sri Lankans are now being catapulted into darkness - eliyen andurata or from light into darkness. S. Weeratunge What about the good lies?In last week's The Sunday Times, Rev. Soma Thera had written about lies. In that article he had said, "lying never brings about good results", but sometimes I think, there are good results in lying. Once, for instance, the former English philosopher, Bertrand Russel, was in the forest when some fox hunters came and asked him, "which way did the fox go?" He purposely pointed out the wrong path and the fox hunters took that path. By telling a lie he saved the life of an innocent fox.W.D.A. de Zoysa |
