    NZ take two SA wickets

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Two wickets before lunch heartened New Zealand on the second day of the first test against South Africa on Saturday.

South Africa reached the interval on 305 for five. Mark Boucher was 13 not out with Lance Klusener yet to score.

The home side resumed on 270 for three after overnight rain had delayed the start by 90 minutes.

Jacques Kallis, 153 not out overnight, was given out caught behind by wicketkeeper Adam Parore off left-arm seamer Shayne O'Connor for his career-best score of 160.

Television replays suggested that Kallis had not made contact with the ball as he lunged forward defensively.

Kallis was at the crease 15 minutes short of six hours, faced 289 balls and hit 26 fours.

He shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 115 with Neil McKenzie.

McKenzie was out to the last ball before lunch. He waved his bat expansively and edged a catch to Parore to give debutant medium pacer Chris Martin his second wicket of the match.

McKenzie scored 55, his maiden test half-century, in just over three hours. He faced 289 balls and hit 11 fours.

    Zimbabwe recover

NEW DELHI, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Alistair Campbell and Stuart Carlisle scored fighting half-centuries to help Zimbabwe bounce back from two early setbacks and reach 232 for five on the opening day of their first Test against India on Saturday.

Campbell struck 70 and Carlisle 58 and their third-wicket stand of 120 revived Zimbabwe after Indian fast bowler Javagal Srinath had struck twice in the first hour at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground to leave the visitors reeling at 15 for two.

Andy Flower was 55 not out and captain Heath Streak 25 not out at the close and their sixth wicket partnership was worth 77 on a satisfactory first day for Zimbabwe in their two-test campaign.

Flower batted briskly to reach his 19th test half-century off only 87 balls and hit seven fours and a six.

Streak chose to bat first but Srinath, who took three for 39 in 16 incisive overs, bowled opener Grant Flower with a late inswinger which clipped the off-stump before Zimbabwe had scored a run. He also dismissed in-form left-hander Gavin Rennie under helpful morning conditions on a firm pitch.

Campbell and Carlisle repaired the early damage, building the innings into the afternoon session before Carlisle was out just before the tea interval, taken at 142 for three.

    England upset Wallabies 22-19

LONDON, Nov 18 (Reuters) - A dramatic try in injury time by winger Dan Luger earned England a 22-19 victory over world champions Australia at Twickenham on Saturday, their first for five years.

Luger chased a high kick into the left-hand corner and just touched down to snatch victory for England who had not beaten the Wallabies since the 1995 World Cup.

The referee needed to ask his video official to study a replay of the action before confirming the try.

The try came after Australia seemed to be heading towards their fourth successive victory over the English after winger Matt Burke scored all of his team's 19 points with a second-half try, four penalties and a conversion.

    Prasanna disqualified

    By Leonard Ratnayake
Fourteen times national champion and three times SAF Gold medalist Sumith Prasanna was denied of his 5th title when he was disqualified in the Middle Weight event of the 75th National Boxing Championship, at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium last evening.

The Jury of judges decided that Prasanna had punched the opponent defying the referee's command to stop the fight in the middle weight 75kgs & under event.

"He pushed me and in the counter, I had already thrown my arms for the punch when the referee called to stop the bout. How can I stop my punch when my arm was already stretched?," asked an emotionally charged Prasanna.

Prasanna is of the view that the referee, who did not even count down, should have made the decision, which the jury had done, following an appeal by a supporter of the opponent.

"I have never been beaten in this event for 14 years.

This type of decisions is discouraging. I am not sure what I should do now" said a dissapointed Prasanna.

Sri Lanka Army retained the 75th National Boxing Championship title for the second consecutive year with Slimline going down fighting with the runners-up title.

Slimline Boxing club who represented a strong seven member team to destroy the 11-year hoodoo of the forces who have won the title, failed in their attempts to take the gloves away from the forces, but were able to make an impact finishing the runners-up to the championship.

Four out of seven Slimline boxers qualified for the finals and eventually they won all their finals amidst enthusiatic spectators' response who cheered them right through to victory.

In an interesting occurence, last year's best boxer M.M.D. Paris was beaten in the preliminary rounds by Slimline's Anurudda Ratnayake who won the Fly Weight 51 Kgs & Under in a third round RSC CCC to Jayantha Kumara of Army.

    Yousuf Youhana saves follow-on

LAHORE, Pakistan, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Yousuf Youhana scored an undefeated 77 to help Pakistan avoid the follow-on against England on the fourth day of the first test on Saturday.

He helped the home team end on 333 for eight in their first innings at the Gaddafi stadium, still 147 runs behind England's total of 480 for eight declared.

The number five put on an unbroken stand of 60 for the ninth wicket with off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, who had taken all of England's wickets in their first innings.

England all-rounder Craig White, who made a test best score of 93 on Friday and ended Saturday with three for 48, said: "I am really disappointed that we were not able to enforce the follow-on.

"The ball reverse-swung all day but Pakistan batted well."

The home side had resumed on 119 for two, still 162 short of their immediate target, and Salim Elahi and Inzamam-ul-Haq added a further 80, taking their third-wicket partnership to 98, before White made the first breakthrough.

Elahi, dropped at silly mid-off by England captain Nasser Hussain off left-arm spinner Ashley Giles when on 38, edged the ball into his stumps as he played forward six runs later.

Inzamam reached his 28th half-century in 68 tests, including eight fours, before he was bowled for 63 as he aimed to hit Giles through midwicket.

In the last over before lunch White had 19-year-old debutant Qaiser Abbas caught by Graeme Hick at gully for two and at lunch Pakistan were 210 for five.
