K.V.W. de Silva
We recently heard the sad news of the passing away of K.V.W. de Silva,
former principal of Bandarawela Central. K.V.W. de Silva's name was synonymous
with Bandarawela Central College.
Bandarawela Central is known as the 'light of Uva'. Mr. de Silva led
the school from the mid '60's to the late '70's. This was the golden era
in the 50 year history of Bandarawela Central when education, sports and
extra curricular activities were at their height.
Mr. de Silva was born in 1926 and studied at Prince of Wales, Moratuwa.
He graduated from the University of Ceylon and did his post graduate studies
at Peradeniya University. He started his teaching career at Welimada Central
and served at Wellassa Maha Vidyalaya, Walala Central, Yatawatta Vidyalaya,
Matale and Uva College Badulla, before becoming Principal of Bandarawela
Central in 1966. After he left the school he served as Chief Education
Officer in Bandarawela and Monaragala. Mr. de Silva was also the Principal
of the Maharagama Teacher Training College . He retired in the late '80s
as Director of Education, Matara.
Mr. de Silva had an excellent personality. He was never influenced by
politicians and higher officers. He earned the love and respect of thousands
of grateful students.
May he attain the bliss of Nibbana.

A message to his son
Nandadasa Kodagoda
"You got it from your father,
It was all he had to give,
So it's yours to use and cherish,
For as long as you may live.
If you lose the watch he gave you,
It can always be released.
But a black mark on your name, son,
Can never be erased.
It was clean the day you took it,
And a worthy name to bear.
When he got it from his father,
There was no dishonour there.
So make sure you guard it wisely,
After all is said and done,
You'll be glad the name is spotless,
When you give it to your son"
In memory of Prof. Nandadasa Kodagoda

Noorul Ismail
The news of the death of Noorul Mahabuba Ismail (fondly called Uvisa
Umma) was received with sorrow by all those who knew her in Sri Lanka.
Uvisa Umma migrated to Sweden 17 years ago with some of her family members.
She was a prominent figure among Sri Lankans domiciled in Sweden. A grand
old lady, she was full of grace and charm. Her charismatic personality
and genial disposition earned her many a friend. She contributed generously
to charity and shunned ostentatious living. She was at the 'beck and call'
of all those who sought her assistance. Many sought her wise counsel. There
was never a dull moment in the presence of Uvisa Umma. When family members
gathered for the weekends at her cosy home in Sweden, she invariably reminisced
about the happier times in Sri Lanka and expressed a desire to return to
her motherland. But fate decided otherwise.
Her husband pre-deceased her some time ago. She was a loving and caring
mother to her family of six boys and one girl, who in turn showered her
with comforts. A very pious lady, she never failed to observe the 30-day
fast during Ramadan.
Uvisa Umma is no more. But memories of her will linger long.
May she attain Jennathul Firdous-Aameen.
