Lanka to face Pakistan today

The Pakistan women's cricket team arrived in Sri Lanka on Friday They will play six one day games against the Sri Lanka side starting today. 

The West Indies women's cricket team was due to visit Sri Lanka but at the last minute they withdrew and the void caused by their last minute pull out was filled in by the Pakistan women's team. Hurried discussions with the Pakistan Women's Cricket Association's officials were held by Gwen Herat, President of the Sri Lanka Women's Cricket Association and she was able to persuade the Pakistani officials to send a women's cricket team at short notice.

The tour is being sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka with Lanka Wall Tiles and AMW as co-sponsors. The Sri Lanka team is captained by Sutheershini Sivanathan and is coached by former Ceylon opener Nihal Kodituwakku. The Pakistan women's team is led by Shaiza Khan. 

Today's match will be played at the Colts Cricket grounds. The second game and the third game will be on January 22 and 23 which will also be at the Colts grounds. 

On January 26 the visitors will play their fourth match in Asgiriya Kandy, where the Kandy Mayor Harindranath Dunuwille will be the chief guest. The last two matches will be on January 29 and 30. Both these matches will be played at the Colts grounds again. (MSA)

Shihantha De Silva shoots up
Twenty eight-year-old Dinesh Shihantha De Silva of Sri Lanka has rocketed up the ratings recently to become International e-mail Chess Group (IECG) World No. 160 on the established rating list.

He has risen up by 149 places from the previous position of 309, after some strong performances. He has entered the 'Masters' category now. His e-mail rating 2239 points has the potential to become a world number one.

Dinesh is by profession a director of the air-travel firm Webline Travel. He is also the brother of national men's chess champion Nirosh de Silva.

Asoka umpire at U-19 World Cup
Umpire Asoka De Silva has been appointed to officiate at the ICC Under 19 World Cup, which which is now in progress in New Zealand. The competition ends on February 9.

Asoka De Silva began officiating at international matches in 1998. So far he has participated in 10 Tests and 13 one-day internationals. Four of the Test matches have been outside Sri Lanka: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and India. He also officiated at the Asia Cup in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1999.

A former Sri Lanka player, 45-year-old Asoka played 10 Tests and 27 one-day internationals for Sri Lanka.

Minister congrats Murali
"I am happy to see such an excellent performance by Muralitharan who started his cricket career during my time of Presidency of the Cricket Board", the Minister said in his congratulatory message.
Merrille Perera heads Scrabble
Professor Merrille Perera FRCP (UK) was elected President of the Sri Lanka Scrabble Committee 2002 at the annual general meeting held at the Sumithrayo Training Centre, Colombo 7.

Desert Classic stars fly Emirates
Emirates announced today it has continued its long-standing association with the PGA European Tour sanctioned Dubai Desert Classic. 

As Official Carrier for the 13th edition of tournament, Emirates will fly some of the golf world's top players to Dubai when the action gets underway from 7-10 March 2002 at the Emirates Golf Club's Majlis Course.


Bonanza golf 

On Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd February, the Victoria Golf Club will be hosting The Donald Steel Trophy and The Ebert Pot for Gentlemen and The Pam Fernando Cup and The Victoria Bowl for Ladies. 

Players visiting from overseas are flying in to compete against our own many and talented golfers in these four prestigious tournaments held annually in honour of the architects of the Victoria's golf course, Sri Lanka's greatest lady-golfer, and the founder of the Victoria Golf Club, Mark Bostock. 

There should be some good parties at the 19th hole to celebrate, commiserate, or just to have a good time. The Mahaweli Reach, Earl's Regency and The Citadel Hotels are all offering good rates in their efforts to encourage sporting events to boost tourism. The Donald Steel Trophy is a 36-hole scratch stableford competition with one round being played on each day. 

The Ebert Pot will be decided by the 36-hole handicap stableford scored over the same two round as the Donald Steel Trophy. The Ladies will play the same format for the Pam Fernando Trophy (Scratch) and the Victoria Bowl (Handicap). There will also be an optional International Matchplay team event on Monday 4th February with teams representing the British Isles, Rest of the World and Sri Lanka.
