Majestic changes
Instead of being forced to put up with "camera copies" of international movie blockbusters, Colombo audiences can now look forward to the latest from Hollywood.

After two months of refurbishment Ceylon Theatres set out to redefine movie entertainment with the long awaited re-opening of the Majestic City cinema in Colombo. And they've opened with nothing less than "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" which won four Oscars at the Academy Awards last month.

With the makeover of the cinema, Ceylon Theatres hopes to resurrect the "movie going experience". The state-of-the-art Majestic has one air-conditioned theatre which seats 444 people and is equipped with the most sophisticated hardware. To ensure that every detail in the movie is reproduced to perfection, it has a xenon lamp projection system combined with Dolby and DTS sound systems, which promise the best ever sound effects.

The reinforcement on family entertainment can be seen in this cinema. A bar in the large comfortable foyer serves refreshments ranging from popcorn and ice cream to beverages. There is also a separate lounge for smokers thus catering to almost every age group.

Commenting on why Majestic City was especially chosen to represent the revamping of Sri Lankan cinema, Pravin David of Ceylon Theatres said, "The cinema is part of a complex which is very popular in Colombo." He explains how the refurbishment will be advantageous to the well-known shopping centre, as it gives its shoppers the entire entertainment package. "Seeing as it's part of the Ceylon Theatres Group, we thought why not?"

"Ceylon Theatres" a major corporate entity for 75 years today has eight cinemas operating nationwide bringing films of different language, style and cultures to its patrons.

In previous years the unstable economy took its toll on the theatres in the country. With the lack of support and funds, the quality of the films produced in Sri Lanka and those imported from abroad failed to attract its audiences. The cinemas themselves were also out dated, hence denying viewers a memorable film-going experience. Acknowledging a drop in popularity, Ceylon Theatres launched their campaign to remedy it.

The re-opening of the Majestic City Cinema could not have come at a better time. It certainly has boosted the country's cinema tradition, offering good movie entertainment with the latest cinematic technology. Ceylon Theatres intends to proceed with its campaign with the development of further multi cinema complexes where multiple movies can be screened simultaneously. All existing theatres will also be refurbished and fully equipped to equal the standards of Majestic Cinema and provide quality international and local hit movies.
