Premier ponders de-proscription
Prime Minister Ranil Wickreme-singhe conferred with Attorney General K.C.Kamalasabeyson on Friday over the possibility of de-proscribing the LTTE only hours after the rebel group leader Velupillai Prabhakaran imposed a condition that the ban on the group be lifted before direct talks with the Government of Sri Lanka scheduled to be held in Thailand.

Uproar in India over Prabha's presser
India's southern Tamil Nadu leaders expressed revulsion at LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran's news conference on Wednesday, but New Delhi reacted cautiously saying there was no change in its position vis-a-vis the group banned in this country as a terrorist organisation.

CPC muddle worsens despite AG's advice
The Central Provincial Council and some 50,000 employees under it were plunged into further chaos and controversy as the President and the government continued to clash over it while the Attorney General gave a clear direction. Attorney General K.C. Kamalasabayson has advised that the crisis-ridden Council should be handed over to the party which commands the support of the majority.

CBK to lecture on democracy
President Chandrika Kumaratunga is scheduled to visit India next week to deliver a guest lecture in New Delhi. The President has been invited to deliver the Madhava Rao Memorial lecture in New Delhi. President Kumaratunga will speak on democracy and conflict resolution, Presidential spokesman Harim Peiris said.

A9 dispute drags on
The issue over the complete reopening of the A9 road enabling passengers free travel between the north and the south is yet to be resolved and private bus operators have been told by the government to put off a proposed meeting with LTTE leaders.
