Cancer Hospital Project
Fan donates Rs. 150m
Marlon Fernandopulle reporting from Sharjah
Sri Lanka cricketer's project to build a cancer hospital received a tremendous boost when a United Arab Emirates businessman made a magnanimous gesture by donating 150 million Sri Lankan Rupees towards the noble cause at a felicitation dinner hosted by the UAE Committee for Development of Cricket in Sri Lanka.

The business tycoon Shukri Saleh Yahya, Chairman of Zarara Energy Limited is keen follower of Sri Lanka cricket and a die-hard supporter of the team. He is a very close associate of Sanath Jayasuriya and Muttaih Muralitharan and is reported to have visited the players residences back in Sri Lanka. The presentation was made to Mahela Jayawardene who is spearheading the campaign to collect 750 million Sri Lanka Rupees.

Speaking exclusively to the Sunday Times soon after making his generous gesture, Shukri said, "I think this hospital is something your country needs very badly. I am very happy that your cricketers have taken the bold step and indeed proud to make this donation. I will also be sending a few engineers to help your guys with the construction next month".

Campaign leader Mahela Jayawardene was delighted with the gesture. "We have had a head start to this campaign. The response has been unbelievable over here. I am confident that we will get good response from other countries as well". In addition to this donation the cricketers also received a further Rs.10 million from the UAE Cricket Board, Lanka Lions and from employees working over here. Shukri's affinity towards the Lankan team developed following his second son Alawi Shukri's interest in the game and the Lankan cricketers especially Murali and Jayasuriya. According to the father his son is glued to the television set whenever the Lankans are playing as his two Sri Lankan domestic helpers used to watch all the Lankan games showed on TV.

Soon Alawi was a Jayasuriya and Muralitharan fan as well. So much so that he wanted to meet them personally. To fulfill his son's ambition the family visited South Africa during Sri Lanka's tour to that country a few years ago and stayed in the same hotel as the Sri Lankans stayed.

From that day onwards the Shukri family has been closely associated with the Sri Lanka team. Whenever the Lankans are in the Dubai they are invited as special guests for all their functions while the family makes it a point to host the Lankan team for lunch during their short stay in here.

Earlier this year Muralitharan arranged for his coach Sunil Fernando to visit Dubai and coach Alawi for two weeks as he is hell-bent on playing the game. After meeting the Lankan stars and striking a strong bond between them, nine-year-old Alawi has one more ambition to fulfill. He says, he wants to be a Jayasuriya or Muralitharan and play for Sri Lanka some day.
