Popular column in book form
The person at the other end of the telephone introduced himself
as Sundara Nihathamani de Mel. What a beautiful name, I thought!
Sundara Nihathamani - 'pretty, unassuming' would be the nearest
translation. I soon realised it was quite a familiar name - I knew
he was a journalist but just couldn't place him. (Presently he is
the editor of Lakbima, Sunday edition). It was only when he mentioned
that he writes a weekly column that it dawned on me that I had been
a regular reader enjoying every word of it. He calls it 'Manige
Theeruwa' - Mani's Column.
Columnist de
Mel has put out a selection of his 'Manige Theeruwa' in book form.
Not one but two books are already out. They are bound to be best
sellers because his style is so readable and the subject matter
so topical. Mani (easy to call him that) has the ability to develop
the situations in a most interesting manner. Often it takes the
form of a family chit -chat. Invariably it's his own family - his
wife, son and himself discussing a burning issue of the day. He
comes home and breaks some news and then they start analysing it.
Or else the wife picks up something she has heard.
They start dissecting
it. Often the two of them take opposing viewpoints with the son
butting in with his own version. Different points of view are thus
expressed on a particular topic allowing the reader to form his
own judgement or giving the reader plenty to ponder.
Although Mani
does not use a heading for the column in the newspaper, he has put
in titles for the ones which appear in the books. He has also included
the date each column appeared. This helps the reader to look back
and place the topic of discussion in the correct perspective. On
September 20, 1992 the subject of Mani's Column was Arjuna Ranatunga
wearing a sarong and shirt to a party.
An ardent fan
of his is shocked. He breaks the news to Mani. They argue the pros
and cons. Finally they agree that Arjuna may have decided to get
into politics!
Mani's is subtle
satire. He is not afraid to mention names - however big they may
be. But he writes with malice to none. Mani's decision to release
collections in book form gives for the reader a chance to enjoy
them at leisure.
