Dates for talks after May 24
The date for peace talks will only be fixed after the D-Day plus 90 days period specified in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the reopening of the A-9 highway linking Jaffna with the rest of the mainland, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.

Tiger fury over TNA statement
The LTTE has shown its anger at a TULF-TNA statement urging Tamils to show restraint in inciting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jeyaram and told the politicians to pressurise the government to lift the ban on the guerrillas. At a meeting summoned by the LTTE at Wanni, TNA parliamentarians were also told they should campaign for the repealing of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

LTTE warned and discharged
The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission has warned the LTTE against harassing civilians in Batticaloa . The SLMM in a press release said that "The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Batticaloa is much concerned about the harassment to the members of the public in the Batticaloa District by the LTTE."

Punctually late CBK misses US Presidents
President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga admitted that her requests to meet at least two US presidents at the White House arrived in Washington DC too late - not once, but twice.
"I wanted to pay a courtesy call, but I was told I had made the request too late in the day," she told reporters at the UN news conference.

Showdown on SriLankan deal
The controversial multi-million dollar deal between SriLankan Airlines and Emirates will come up for review at the highest level from tomorrow.
A team headed by the Emirates boss Tim Clark has flown here on a trouble-shooting mission amidst demands by Sri Lankan government leaders, especially Aviation Minister Tilak Marapana, that the deal must be revised in Sri Lanka's favour.

Express mode for ETF settlements
An express system whereby employees are able to obtain their monies lying with the Employees Trust Fund (ETF) on a payment of Rs. 1000 per claim has been introduced by the Board, ETF Chairman Dinesh Weerakkody said yesterday.
