Wanni: The Sunday Times exclusive
The Sunday
Times today begins an exclusive series on
"INSIDE WANNI - SITUATION REPORT" giving detailed
accounts of life in the LTTE-held areas.
Iqbal Athas, The Sunday Times Consultant Editor/ Defence Correspondent,
was granted access to travel to many areas including Puthukudiyiruppu,
Mullaitivu, Pooneryn, Murikandi, Tunnukai and Mallawi. He was accompanied
by cameraman Alfred Silva.
In this issue, LTTE Political Wing leader, S.P. Thamilchelvan, in
an exclusive interview speaks of the latest developments related
to the peace talks. He also spells out LTTE's position in respect
of various issues.
He says that both the Royal Norwegian and Sri Lanka Government are
hopeful that peace talks could begin in Thailand later this month.
Mr. Thamilchelvan defended the LTTE's right to bring in arms and
take in cadres since these matters were not covered by the Ceasefire
Agreement. However, he said the LTTE was not engaged in these activities.

For the first time since they were taken prisoner, Mr. Athas was
allowed to meet Commander Ajith Kumara Boyagoda, the highest ranking
(Navy) officer and six soldiers who are in custody.
