Ajith special helps CH win on the post
By Bernie Wijesekera
CH and FC trailing 18-13, but seconds before the long whistle (injury time) Havies won the scrum, 10 metres out, but lost it. Winger Ajith Upawansa was quick to move in and crashed over for a left corner flag try which had all Park aglow. Nalin Dissanayake fired over the crossbar for CH&FC to win by 20 points (1 goal, 2 tries and a penalty) to 18 (a goal, 1 try and 2 penalties) on the post in an 'A' Caltex League rugby match at Havelock Park yesterday. At the turn around the visitors led 10-3.

Rugby wise it was a pathetic display by both teams - poor ball handling and thinking. CH were worse despite dominating the entire second half with plenty of good ball coming their way. The forwards were lethargic and were constantly 'blown; by Referee Jamaldeen for infringements.

Further Nalin Dissanayake in the last line of defence, was found wanting. The second Havies try scored by Ruwan Suranga, off a quick throw, was a gift due to poor thinking by fullback Dissanayake. It was planted under the posts. Tikiri Dissanayake added the extra points. Havies made some sweeping moves and had the CH defence in disarray. Shifting scrum half Milinda Jayasinghe, who replaced fullback Dissanayake with deep kicks to touch, took the pressure off. Earlier Jayasinghe was shown the yellow card for unwarranted play.

CH opened scoring in the fourth minute with a penalty put over by Dissanayake. Havies hit back with a superb move which resulted in a penalty with the CH line off-side. Tikiri Dissanayake put it over - three all.

A beautiful move by the Havies threes saw centre Ruwan Saranga cut through to fall over enabling Tikiri to convert and Havelocks led 10-3. CH hit back from a scrum close to the line where Ajith Upawansa powered his way for an unconverted try. 10-8.
Havelocks skipper Somaratne was injured and hobbled out. Havelocks scored in the 27th minute through Ruwan Suranga under the posts to lead 15-8 at lemons.
Despite dominating the second half CH failed to penetrate until (sub) prop Jayantha Ranaweera, who came in place of Narein Perera, scored an unconverted try off a maul: 13-15. Havelocks forged ahead through a penalty put over by Tikiri 18-13.
During injury time Havelocks lapsed to lose the match 20-18
N. Jamaldeen refereed.

Navy torpedo Galle 31-10
The Sri Lanka Navy playing cohesive rugby after leading 16-0 at half time drowned Galle RFC by 31 points (1 goal, 3 tries and 3 penalties) to nil in a Caltex 'A' league match at Welisara yesterday.

Though the Ruhunu Club lost this tie to the sailors, they gave a plucky display in the loose to keep the sailors at bay. They tackled hard and tormented the sailors. It was Navy's improved skills plus an abundance of stamina which helped them to win.

Half back Ranatunga, flanker Jayasuriya, No 8 Malwana and winger Ershan scored a try each. Fullback Gunapala converted a try and put over three penalties.

Winger Dinesh give Isipatana 23-3 win
By M.Shamil Amit
Winger Dinesh Kumara with a hat-trick of tries was the star in the rugby encounter between Isipathana and Kingswood played at Longdon Place yesterday where Isipathana defeated Kinsgwood by 23 points (four tries one penalty) to 3 (one penalty). At the breather Isipathana led 15-3.

In the first half Isipatana got going in the first minute of play through a try from winger Duminda Priyadharshana. Full back Krishan Wettasinghe's conversion went astray. The Kingswoodians playing with some purpose succeeded to reduce the lead in the 11th minute by a penalty put over by full back Vinod Bandara. Four minutes later winger Dinesh Kumara who played a tireless game was rewarded with a try when in a five yard scrum he barged over for a try. Krishan again fluffed the kick at goal.

With the Isipatanian supporters going wild the man of the moment Dinesh following a kick to touch from the boot of fly half Naresh Liyanage dashed to the right corner flag defeating a Kingswood player to lay his hands on the ball for a try. With no more scoring done in this half lemons were taken.

Resuming in the second half Kingswood playing to a set plan did everything but with no purpose as they could not penetrate their opponents solid defence. They were offered two penalties which was fluffed by Vinod Bandara.

The first scoring points in this half was by Isipathana when Kushan's kick for once was correct on target. The place kicking of both the sides were off colour. Isipathana missed many chances of increasing their tally.

The Kingswoodians had no luck on their side as for most part of the second half they were in their opponents territory. With the game nearing end hero Dinesh with a blistering burst down the line went over for a try with Krishan's kick going astray again. With which referee Aruna Jayasekera blew the long whistle.

With the opening round of the FIFA 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup finals entering a crucial stage, many upsets were seen during the last few days.

A summary of the matches played so far.

The biggest upset so far was the defaet of defending champions France by Senegal one nil in the opener. The absence of play maker of the French team Zenedine Zidane not playing did make a dent in the French team.

But for the small African country Senegal entering the World Cup finals for the time and beating the defending champs Frnace in the opener was great and beyond all expectations for them.

The Senagalese celebtrated as if they had won the cup itself.Celebrations in Senegal was so much its President went in a open motorcade with a football held aloft in his hands.

The last time a African side that created a upset in the opener was when Cameroon beat Argentina in 1990.

Saturday 1 June the Germans just had a field day with the Saudis. The Saudis just watched the Germans score as a many as eight goals.

Cameroon held Irelands for a one all draw, while Denmark made its mark by defeating Uruguay 2-1.

On 2 June the match that was played at a fast phase was the match between England and Sweden. The Swedes went onto hold the England side to a one all draw.Other matches played that was Paraguay held South Africa 2 all draw.
Monday 3 June was the match everyone was looking forward to Brazil vs Turkey. The Turks did score first, but the entertainment and dribbling, side flicks and the real Brazilian Samba was there for most of the match.Ronaldo scored his first goal in three years in an international, after he was injured in the knee and kept out of the game since the last world cup.

Emerson the Brazilian captain who played ina friendly on Saturday kept goals, though his place is in the half line and injured his shoulder and is out of the entire tournament. But the replacements the Brazilians have are equally good,Denilson the left out who was susbstituted in the second half showed what a dribbler of the ball he is.The Rivaldo -Ronaldo combination is sure to create problems for the defence of the other teams.

Italy one of the favourites for the World Cup scored two goals to nil against Equador.Mexico did have some anxious moments against Croatia but won by one gaol to nil. June 4 Costa Rica beat China 2 nil,and the two host nations Korea and Japan too played their first matches.

Korea scored two goals against Poland much to the satisfaction of their supporters who turned out in their thousands.Japan ofcourse had to be contented with their 2 all draw with Belgium. Both host nations are upbeat after their performances.

The co- hosts preserved a world cup record dating back to the first tournament staged in 1930, in Uruguay . No host nation has yet lost their opening match.

June 5 another shocker was the United States beating the much fancied Portugal by 3 goals to 2. Germany in its second match had some hiccups as well when they were held to a one all draw by Ireland, and the celebrations in Ireland went on till the following day. Russia won against Tunisia by 2 goals to nil.

June 6 Denmark drew with Senegal one all, while France was held to a goalless draw by Uruguay. This was the first match which was goalless.

Saudi Arabia played a much better game than they played against Germany. They lost one nil to Cameroon. Saudi Arabia was the first team to be eliminated from the first round.

The match of the tournament so far was between England and Argentina the arch rivals.Though the Argentines had much of the ball possession they could not find the net.It was a penalty in 44th minute converted by David Beckham that gave England the lead.

There were 6000 English fans in Japan to cheer their side.

This was played on June 7. The other match played on this day was between Spain and Paraguay.Spain won by 3 goals to one and was the first team to get qualified for the second round. Sweden won against Nigeria 2goals to one.
