Harassed MPs
to complain
By Dilrukshi Handunnetti
A group of opposition MPs have resolved to urge President Chandrika
Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to put an end to the UNF government's practice
of harassing PA MPs with allegedly trumped up cases against them.
Kandy district
PA MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage said it has been the UNF's practice
to unnecessarily victimise the PA's elected representatives and
innocent party supporters, which fact has been amply demonstrated
by the number of cases that fell apart due to lack of evidence.
In the aftermath
of Galle district MP Piyasena Gamage being arrested in connection
with an assault and the grilling of Nuwara Eliya district MP C.B.
Ratnayake on Thursday, Mr. Aluthgamage said that the PA has learned
that several other MPs are also to be grilled and arrested.
He said the
trend towards political victimisation and the use of law enforcement
agencies to subvert the law needed to be arrested, adding that the
PA backbenchers wanted Presidential intervention to curb further
victimisation.
