Tamil parties
seek release of Vaiko
By S. S. Selvanayagam
The four-party Tamil National Alliance has decided to launch a passive
resistance campaign, urging the Tamil Nadu state government to release
MDMK leader Vaiko (Y. Gopalasamy).
A TNA spokesman
said they would hold a Satyagraha on Thursday in support of Mr.
Vaiko who had been arrested last Thursday for making a speech in
support of the LTTE.
The token fast
is to be held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Vavuniya - though Defence
Minister Tilak Marapana told parliament that the government would
not allow any more hartals in the north east.
A TNA delegation
is to meet the Indian High Commissioner tomorrow to urge the release
of Vaiko.
TNA Parliamentary
group leader R. Sambanthan in a statement on Friday appealed to
the Indian government and the Tamil Nadu State Government to release
Vaiko and his supporters.
