The King still reigns supreme
It's four weeks since the remix of Elvis Presley's A Little Less Conversation took hold of the No.1 position on the UK single's chart. The late king of Rock'n'Roll has held on to the single's crown for a month. That's not bad for a star who died nearly 25 years ago.

The single has outsold every other single of the current releases. A Little Less Conversation is indeed the defining hit of this summer. It is understood that RCA records are surprised at its success. They were apparently nervously watching sales of the remix.

The song is remixed by Dutch DJ - Tom Holkenborg who is credited as JXL on the single. It took off on the back of the World Cup football tournament as a global TV campaign for Nike. A Little Less Conversation is not Presley's longest running chart-topping song in the UK. The song that spent the longest time at the helm was It's Now Dr. Never back in 1960 when it occupied the No.1 slot for eight consecutive weeks.

Presley's reign may come to an end next week as fellow RCA artiste Gareth Gates is set to enter the chart with his new release. Gates may be helped by the fact that no more copies of A Little Less Conversation, will be pressed as it will be deleted. This means no retailer will be able to order the single but will have to push the stocks in hand. Reports suggest that retailers have enough of the single in hand. It could also be a marketing gimmick to make sure that all remaining copies of the single sell and perhaps give Elvis a fifth week at the summit of the UK chart.

Gareth Gates has a little breathing space to swamp the market with his new offering.

Meanwhile, in order to cash in on Presley power, a few spin offs are set for release in August. It will include a DVD release in a three-set package, a Beatles No.1 Style album of his greatest hits and a TV and film history titled The King.

The DVD will be titled Elvis. The Great Performances in the US Volume 1 will be Centrestage and cover 21 years of his career beginning with his first TV appearance in 1956 to his 'Unchained Melody' special - the year he made his debut on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Steven Allen Show and the Milton Berle Show including clips from his early films. Volume 2 - The Man & His Music - will cover his TV specials from Aloha From Hawaii, Welcome Home Elvis, Elvis On Tour and his 1968 comeback. Volume 3 - From The Waist Up - covers the early work of Elvis narrated by the U2 frontman Bono.

Back to the chart. The week's

highest entry was at No. 2 for the song By The Way by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It's the band's biggest hit in the UK.

The mellow radio- friendly track is very different to what the Brits have been served by the Peppers all these years. Their last big hit was Love Rollercoaster, which peaked at No. 7 in 1997.

Although 'Under The Bridge', was the group's biggest hit universally, it only managed to move as far as the No: 13 spot in 1994.

Despite the stories about her

marriage, Jennifer Lopez has at least her music to take comfort in. Her latest release, I'm Gonna Be Alright, entered the chart at No. 3. It follows the track Ain't it Funny which peaked at No. 4 in March.

I'm Gonna Be Alright is one of the better releases by Lopez - an upbeat pop song with two rap breaks by Nas, it is inspired by the 1996 hit I Got 5 On it by Luniz.

It has taken The Prodigy five

years to return to the UK Top 20. They managed an entry with Baby's Got A Temper at No: 5. Despite the big return, The Prodigy seems to have lost the heat they once had. Their last chart entry was 'Smack' which peaked at No: 8 in November 1997. They debuted in 1991 with the track Charly. They notched up two No:1 songs with Firestarter in 1996 and Breathe in 1997.

Keith Flint has of course not

lost his voice as he continues to shout on the new release.

Amidst all the manufactured pop stars today, there are the odd'really' talented budding stars. One such artiste is 16-year-old Amy Studt. She made her debut with Just A Little Girl at No.14. The track is written by her. The piano-led song is spiced with prim verses and rebellious choruses.

John Entwistle, the bass

guitarist of The Who had been warned by doctors against undertaking a hectic three-month tour of the US.

Entwistle's girlfriend, Lisa Pritchard-Johnson told the New York Post that doctors feared stress could kill him. Entwistle died of a heart attack on the eve of The Who's tour of the US last month. He travelled to Las Vegas despite the warnings and died there. He had high blood pressure at the time.

The surviving members of the band decided to go ahead with the tour as a tribute to Entwistle.
