fair
The
Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena has organised a fun fair "Shepherdian
Fiesta 2002" on July 27 and 28 at the BMICH and Good Shepherd
Convent Hall to raise funds to construct a building for the school.
This fair at the Convent premises will consist of trade stalls,
children's entertainment, discotheque and food stalls while a musical
fiesta will be held on July 28 at the BMICH. Entertainment will
be provided by Sohan and Stars of the '70s.
Fire at Sathutu Uyana get-together
A family get-together organised by the Sri Lankan Airlines
sports council at the Sathutu Uyana in Colombo was disrupted by
a fire that broke out after a skyrocket fell on to a canvas roofing
of the dodgem car hall during a firework display. The fire that
lasted for about 20 minutes was put out by the Fire Brigade. No
casualties were reported, but the damage caused to the canvas roof
has been estimated to be around Rs. 600,000.
JSS seeks over 5,000 promotions
With the CTB heading for privatisation of management, the UNP-affiliated
Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS) has rushed to the Transport Ministry
with a list of 5,200 names for promotions.
These promotions
had been withheld by the previous regime on political grounds, a
JSS official said.
It is reported
that at present about 3,000 employees are spending time without
proper work in the CTB which is undergoing a financial and administrative
crisis.
The JSS official
said that such a situation had arisen due to promotions being granted
on an ad hoc basis to supporters by the previous regime.
If these promotions are made, Transport Ministry officials are reported
to have said the surplus of workers would reach 7,000 and cost the
government an additional Rs. 40 million each month.
Kodikara library
A resource library in memory of the late Prof. Shelton Kodikara
will be opened at the Regional Centre for Strategic Studies in Colombo
tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Education Minister
Karunasena Kodituwakku will be the chief guest while Dr. R. A. Ariyaratne
will deliver the keynote address.
More nature-reserve parks

Plans are under way for the opening of a national
park, two wild life sanctuaries and a nature reserve by the The
Wildlife Conservation Department, an official said. Kaudulla in
Polonnaruwa
Bogahapattiya
in the Puttalam district will be declared open as the 56th and 57th
sanctuaries in Sri Lanka.
The sixth National
Park is mainly aimed at reducing the ever present conflict between
humans and elephants in the region.
Met. Department
worry over land move
The Sri Lanka Meteorology, Oceanography and Hydrology Network
expressed concern over a move to hand over part of the land where
the Meteorology Observatory is situated to the British High Commission.The
Organisation said buildings close to the Observatory could affect
the quality of wind and temperature measurements. Sri Lankan and
international scientists appealed in a letter to the authorities
that this land should not be shared with any others as the work
of the Department could be adversely affected.
Meteorological
data is vital in determining climatic changes, its implications
on environmental pollution, global warming, floods and droughts
etc.
People of
Pussellawa fight crime
Deciding to take spirituality to people in the streets, religious
leaders of the Central Province in the town of Pussellawa have come
together to foster racial and religious harmony and fighting crime
and vice.
Anglican pastor
Dr. Rex Joseph a spokesman for the Inter Religious Solidarity Front
of Pussellawa said that for the past year the people have joined
hands in addressing the root causes of crime and battling drug and
sexual abuse, abduction and violation of Human Rights.
He said that
building on the richness of plurality, people of Pussellawa continue
their work in caring for the sick, sharing with the poor and addressing
the causes of poverty.
Rev. Joseph
said that the Buddhist, Christian, Hindu & Muslim leaders were
working together to be models and the people were responding positively.
He said they would soon be setting up inter religious student assemblies
so that there would be more harmony and respect for diversity among
future generations.
A lecture
on governance
A Public Lecture on "Good Governance and Freedom of Information:
An International Perspective" by Dr. Vikram Chand, Senior Public
Sector Management Specialist for the World Bank will be held tommorow
at the BMICH ( Committee Rooms Wing, from 5:00 p.m. onwards. ).
The event has been organised by the Centre for Policy Alternatives.
