Bishops express concern over CBK's delay
By Nalaka Nonis
Catholic bishops have expressed concern over the delay on the part
of President Chandrika Kumaratunga to appoint John Amaratunga as
the minister of Christian Affairs though he had been nominated for
the post three weeks ago by the Prime Minister.
Chilaw's Bishop
Frank Marcus Fernando said the delay was unfortunate while Kurunegala's
bishop Raymond Peiris asked why the Christian community should pay
a price for a political conflict between the President and the government.
Vicar General Fr. Joe Wickremasinghe said he was sad about the delay
and wondered whether the President had no time to make the appointment.
Colombo's new
Arch Bishop Oswald Gomis said he would like to first speak to the
President in this regard before making any comment.
He said he believed the proposed vote of no-confidence against Minister
Amaratunga might be one of the delaying factors.
