Sajith in cracking form for Werneth
By Bernie Wijesekera
Former St. Anthony's Katugastota, Sri Lanka 'A' and Colts CC bowling all-rounder Sajith Fernando, proved to be an instant success whilst playing for Werneth as a professional in the Northern League (Lancashire), in the ongoing summer in London.

Fernando a dandy all-rounder, has led the Park Club, with much success, in the domestic tournaments. Playing for Werneth in the early Spring (April), in uninviting weather, he started with a bang by helping them to win two games.
Firstly it was against Radcliffe to steer them to a 70-run win. A match-winning all-round feat - an attractive 92 and 4 for 50. The Oldham Chronicle headlined Fernando, the Werneth star. Mild mannered Sajith's effort during the early season, inspired his club to be in full bloom.

In the Wood Cup quarter-final against Middleton, Sajith captured 5 for 78. Werneth, made a spirited reply 146 for 2 with 89 runs to be made in 16 overs, Fernando was on 38, when bad light halted play. Resuming the innings, they made it for 5 wickets with Fernando contributing an unbeaten 77. Sajith a fine team man was quite popular with his team-mates on and off the field.

The Advertiser headlined Fernando the star secures victory. This was after the team's win over Crompton. Bowling, an immaculate line he had Crompton groping in the dark - 82 all out. Sajith took 5 for 22. Werneth in reply were in trouble at 2 for 22. The Lankan Pro joined by John Foxill (18) propped up the innings with 43 runs stand for the 3rd wkt. Fernando batting sensibly made 48 n.o. and steered the Chamber Rd., Club to 83 for 4 to win by six wkts.

Playing against Walsden in their own backyard, he had to confront against another Lankan - Test player Niroshan Bandaratilleke, who turns out for the Tamil Union. Fernando, a talented young all-rounder along with Naveed Nawaz played district cricket in Queensland, (Australia) with success. Both showed up well on bouncy pitches.

Sajith, Niroshan and Peiris - three talented players have plenty of cricket before them, but has to be nursed and guided to be in continuity, rather than allow them to be dropped by the wayside.

Rover Pinpoints

Ruled by London?
With the oncoming ICC championship trophy 2002 to be hosted here why is that the local journalists have been informed to contact a person from England representing the ICC, for accreditation to these matches? Rover learns that a local media is intending to telecast this tournament.

Different strokes
How is that the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union is allowing players from Kandy who boycotted the Commonwealth Games in attending trials for selection to the Asian Games? The Union should not entertain any players from Kandy for trials, since their stubbornness last time out.

Good wickets
Voicing his opinion Malcolm Speed the ICC representative, stated that preparation of wickets for the ICC Champions Trophy will be handled by local curators. One wonders as to how many curators have the knowledge and experience though qualified abroad in turning out good wickets. in Sri Lanka.
