PERC Chief to
be quizzed
Former
Treasury Secretary P B Jayasundera is to be quizzed by the CID on
allegations that hundreds of millions of rupees were issued to the
Sri Lanka Rubber Manufacturing and Export Corporation in a questionable
manner.
Dr. Jayasundera,
still the chairman of the powerful Public Enterprises Reforms Commission,
is to be questioned after the former chairman of the corporation,
its accountant and the factory manager were remanded in connection
with a massive fraud.
CID detectives
said they had already recorded statements from several opposition
politicians and top officials in the plantation sector. The CID
probe began after it was alleged that Rs. 540 million of Rs. 941
million released to provide relief to rubber smallholders had been
misapropriated during the previous government.
A special team
has been appointed by the CID to investigate all bank accounts and
vouchers issued for the last six years by the Corporation.
