SLFP split on
18th amendment
The SLFP
high command debated for six hours upto almost midnight yesterday
whether they should support the 18th amendment that seeks to clip
the President's power to dissolve Parliament.
Several influential
party seniors are reported to have urged President Kumaratunga to
support an amended version of the government draft.
The government
draft suggests that the President be prevented from dissolving Parliament
if the Prime Minister is from another party unless she gets his
approval.
A section of
the PA has suggested that the party approve an amendment that prevents
the President form dissolving Parliament unless the party in power
loses its majority and no other party can form the government.
President Kumaratunga
is expected to make known her position at the party's 51st anniversary
celebrations in Kandy today.
