Anton,
honoured by the first Police winning team
Police SC, who created a new milestone in their club rugby history
by winning the Clifford Cup for the first time in 1972, defeating
CH & FC was led by former Sri Lanka forward Anton Benedict.
Later, he went
on to lead the Havelocks SC, too, to reach greater heights. Fittingly,
the former Old Josephian, who played with distinction for the Darley
Road school was honoured by the Police SC when he was the Chief
Guest at the Police-Havies confrontation (second-leg) at Police
Park, last week-end.
According to
Chairman Police Rugby, Daya Jayasundera, who played under Benedict
in the winning team told The Sunday Times that they have decided
to honour the past stalwarts, who played under trying times to uplift
the game. Jayasundera said, one must not forget the ones who contributed
for the game's uplift. This will not confine only among the players,
but the past officials, too will be considered. The present committee,
has decided to this effect, let others continue.
After the match,
it turned out to be a happy reunion among the players, who played
in the '72 winning team but others who served the Police during
this period and cheered them from the balcony of the Officers' Mess.
This team was
coached by late Kavan Rambukwella, without doubt one of the greatest
players to hail from Trinity.
The team mates,
who played under 'Bena' was there to felicitate him - 'Tanker' Ibrahim
Hamid, S. Sivendran, "tiny" Morseth, R.P. Linton, Daya
Jayasundera, Sam 'Seevali' Samarasekera, one of the finest centres
in the game. Seevali from Trinity was a firm tackler, M. Nazeeb,
A. Dasanayake, Nimal Lewke, 'Kalu' Silva a colourful figure from
Royal - wizard in the curved stick (hockey). 'Kalu', now domiciled
in France.
Chitral Silva,
a hockey player (another member of the 'messy' member of the Cheering
Mess Club. He now lives in Canada, made a special visit to mark
this occasion. Nizam Hajireen, hooker Herath, Sunil Perera, (the
scrumhalf) still look good to play. Sisira Mendis another member
of the 'Messy' Club who was a close pal of former Sri Lanka footballer
Sarath Mahinda, (who died under tragic circumstances).
There were many
others though not in the Police graced the occasion. Former CR &
FC player, Ronnie Schokman, Kumar Abeywardena Y.C. Chang, Bryan
Baptist, Gamini Fernando, Chaminda Rupasinghe, Peter Jayawardena,
Tony Amit etc.
Benedict, later
received a memented for his contributions for the game of rugby,
at Police or otherwise. Benedict speaking with emotion said if he
has gone places in life, thanks to the Police.
It was hard
times unlike at present. One had to work and play. In the past it
was not all that easy to join the Police. One had to face bouquets
and brickbats whilst discharging ones duties be it on and off the
field. If you don't lose then you don't know how to win. It taught
me much in later life though I am no longer a Law Enforcing Officer.
He thanked Gamini
Fernando, for giving him a helping hand in his hour of need. Finally
he said that we must all get-together to help Police and Havelocks
SC rugby. I have interest in both clubs as a player and captain.
He commended the Police committee, led by Jayasundera for starting
it with a view to honour past players. -BW
Young,
confident Lankans to tour Pakistan
Sri Lanka 'A' team will tour Pakistan on a three-week tour starting
on Sept. 14. It was early this year the Pakistani under-19 team
toured Sri Lanka who did well to win the series.
The Pakistan's
Cricket Operations Manager Zakir Khan has confirmed the revised
itinerary with the necessary amendments. Bandula Warnapura, Director
Operations BCCSL is handling this tour at this end. Haroon Rashid,
a contmemporary of Warnapura, in the test arena scored a debut test
100 against Sri Lanka. Presently he is a qualified coach in Karachchi
and handling youth cricket. Level II cricket in Pakistan is very
competitive and the PCB is giving all support and encouragement.
Further, it
gives that much-needed exposure for the youngsters. The outcome
is not the criteria. This is the brainchid of the President of the
PCB., Lt. Gen Taquir Zia, which has borne results. One of them was
Younis Khan who made a debut test 100 against Sri Lanka in the Karachi
Test. They won the final Test in Karachi (1999-2000) to lose the
series 2-1. Younis at present is one of Pakistan's consistent run-getters
in both levels. Imran Nasir, one of the best fielders, the Rawalpindi
Express, Shoaib Akthar, Shoaib Malik etc., who are now regular members
of the National Squad.
The youngsters
of the calibre of bowling all-rounder Malingha Gajanayake, free
scoring batsman Jeewan Mendis and few other schoolboys who have
been performing well at school and club level should be considered
for this tour - along with the likes of Sajith Fernando, Kaushal
Weeraratne, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, Hashantha Fernando, Shantha Kalawitagoda,
Jehan Mubarak, Michael Vandort. The Chairman of the Selection Committee,
Guy de Alwis and his Committee should give due consideration to
talented young players. -BW

Why the stern
action against SLBF referees?
Rover
is informed by the members of the Sri Lanka Basketball Referees
Association that the coach of the team that lost the finals to the
law enforcement officers coached by a young and talented coach in
Batticaloa recently has threatened to take stern disciplinary action
against the referees who blew the finals as they did not support
his team to win. The team with a number of Sri Lanka players and
coached by this coach has never won a club tournament in Sri Lanka
or even in International tournaments in foreign countries. Who is
