Samurdhi officers
to protest against police inaction
Samurdhi Officers in the Polonnaruwa district will stage a token
strike tomorrow to protest against the attack on them in Medirigiriya
by UNP supporters.
A spokesman
for the Samurdhi animators told The Sunday Times police had not
acted impartially to mete out justice to the victims with a number
of suspects still at large.
A list of 39
suspects who attacked Samurdhi animators had been forwarded to the
police but only 27 had been arrested, he said.
"The purpose
of the protest is to force police to arrest the other suspects and
urge them not to cow down to political pressure," the spokesman
said. "If police are unable to take necessary actions even
after the protest, we ourselves will go to courts seeking justice,"
he said.
Last week, the
police were criticised by the Medirigiriya magistrate for the manner
in which it handled the case.
But Medirigiriya
police said that they had arrested all the suspects and rejected
the claim that 12 more suspects were still at large.
Meanwhile, the
Samurdhi Movement has sent a letter to the President appealing to
her to intervene and help them obtain justice.
