A
woman tends her field at Polgasowita, an area 15 km south
of Colombo which supplies most of the 'green leaves' sold
in the city. These families have toiled for generations to
survive off the soil, eking out a meagre living by selling
bundles of leaves for a rupee or two. Middlemen sell the bundles
for 10 times that price. In stark contrast is the hi-tech
glitter of the city, vividly demonstrated by the latest gadgetry
on display at the Infotel exhibition, such as this mobile
phone with a built-in camera and a price tag of Rs 50,000.
