Give abducted
men to us: SLMM
By Shelani Perera
After settling the crisis over the detention of seven soldiers,
the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission has proposed measures to prevent
similar crises in the future.
SLMM spokesman
Teitur Torkelsson said they had proposed that any troops or LTTE
cadres taken in by either party in a disputed territory be released
immediately or be handed over to the SLMM till the issue was sorted
out.
He said the
government and the LTTE had responded positively though there were
some technical problems and the SLMM hope to work out the deal soon.
The spokesman,
however, emphasised that the SLMM as in the earlier case would not
get involved in judicial matters. He said the SLMM saw the proposed
solution as being simple, smooth and quick.
Last month,
the LTTE detained seven soldiers in Trincomalee after the Kantalai
police arrested two LTTE cadres for the alleged felling of trees
and illegal possession of firearms. After a two-week standoff which
put the peace process on shaky ground, the two LTTE cadres were
allowed bail by the Court of Appeal while the LTTE released the
seven soldiers.
