Is Thursday's gun attack on the residence of the Rregistrar
of the Sri Lanka Medical Council connected to its opposition to
the setting up of a private medical college?
Police are investigating
whether the attack and Tuesday night's incident at the SLMC office
where an intruder smashed a window and tried to set fire to documents
were connected to the setting up of a private medical school soon
.
On Thursday
around 10. 30 p.m., six shots were fired at the Bethesda Place residence
of Registrar, Prof. B. L Panditharatne.
An SLMC official
said they opposed the setting up of the private medical college
which he said had obtained advances from parents even before permission
was granted.
The SLMC has
sent a letter to Interior Minister John Amaratunga who said he had
instructed the police to take necessary action against the persons
alleged to be involved in the attack.
Acting immediately,
the police have placed two guards outside the Bambalapitiya residence
of Prof. Panditharatne who reportedly suffered from shock and is
now in hospital.
