Visits by Bala,
Helgeson delayed
Norway, which is playing the role of facilitator in the peace talks
between the Government and Tiger guerrillas, is to focus attention
on developing southern Sri Lanka.
With this in
mind, Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgeson, who is heading
the facilitation efforts, had planned a visit to Hambantota later
this week. However, the programme did not materialise since he has
still not arrived in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Helgeson
was due at the same time as Tiger guerrilla Chief negotiator Anton
Balasingham and his Australian born wife, Adele Anne.
Dr. Balasingham
was expected to arrive in Colombo last Thursday and board a Sri
Lanka Air Force helicopter flight to the Wanni. However, the visit
was called off at the eleventh hour.

Report by Iqbal Athas for details of how the visit of the Balasinghams
was called off.
