Pro-SLMC Nawamani
attacked
By Chris Kamalendran
A Tamil weekend newspaper office was set ablaze by unidentified
persons yesterday damaging part of the building, furniture and equipment,
including computers.
The editorial
office of 'Nawamani' at Kalubowila was attacked around 4 a.m. yesterday
and a fire was spotted by a person who had woken up to begin the
fast in an adjoining building.
The newspaper
is known to be pro-SLMC and party leader Rauff Hakeem visited the
damaged office yesterday before he flew to Oslo for the peace talks.
Police told
The Sunday Times that initial investigations indicated some personal
rivalry and the attack appeared to be a contract job. They said
petrol had been poured through the door of the closed building to
set it on fire.
Police brought
sniffer dogs to the area but so far the only clue was that the slippers
of one of the attackers had been burnt and he also might have suffered
burn injuries.
Nawamani editor
M.P.M. Azhar said last night that he believed the attack was connected
with his newspaper's policy but he vowed they would not be intimidated
by such threats.
