Harsha Kumara best boxer
T.B. Harsha Kumara of Slimline SC, Pannala was adjudged the best boxer at the 77th Boxing Nationals concluded at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday.

Harsha defeated K.C.N. Alexander of Seevali MMV, Ratnapura by a single point 15-14 in a thrilling bout of the Under 48 kgs category. Alexander was adjudged the best loser.

Army SC 'A' won the nationals when they secured 36 points, defending champions Slimline SC, Pannala coming in second place with 24 points. The chief guest was Sherard Amalean, Chairman of MAS Holdings who gave away the awards.

Blind Cricketers for World Cup in India
A Sri Lankan team of 17 cricketers and four officials are due to leave for the 2nd World Cup tourney to be held in Chennai, India from December 3 to 14 this year. The team is led by Chandanakumara Suriyarachchie with U. Priyantha as his deputy. The other teams participating in the contest are: India, Pakistan, England, Australia and South Africa.

The SriLanka team has been training at the Premadasa Stadium Kettarama, from November 26 to 28 from 9 a.m. to 3.30 p.m daily under the guidance of BCCSL coaches Praneeth Peiris and Leslie Narangoda.


A new Cricket web site launched
A web-site that provides a number of innovative features to cricket fans has just been launched by Coca-Cola, states a press release. The site is hosted by cricInfo.com and will be linked to the official Sri Lankan cricket web site lankacricket. lk hosted for the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka By cricInfo.com.

Mr. Lakshman Peiris Brand Manager said, "Coca-Cola fan zone is designed to provide opportunities to cricket fans to follow the progress of the Sri Lankan team. With this in mind Coca-Cola fan zone will allow fans to increase their knowledge about the game and get to know more about their favorite cricketers. Features such as emailing the players will lend the opportunity for fans to send greetings and messages to the cricketers while they are on national duty. Surfing fans also stand chance to win exclusive cricket premia personally autographed by cricketers and many more cricket memorabilia".

Other features include Talkboard - which allows fans the opportunity to post their views about specific points of interest; a weekly poll in which fans will be able to vote on topical issues; a chat room that allows fans to chat with their favourite circketers and commentators; audio clippings of interviews with famous cricketing personalities and a coaching section for the future cricketers, where they can obtain some important tips from the national cricketers.

The site will be refreshing experience to the emerging techno savy youth, keeping them continuously entertained and interested through evolving features and information, said Mr. Imal Fonseka the Marketing Manager.


Royal junior table tennis champs
The junior paddlers of Royal College emerged champions in the Under 10 and 16 at the All Island Inter-Schools Table Tennis championships conducted by the Schools Table Tennis Association which was held at S. Thomas' College, indoor stadium in Mt Lavinia.

In the Under 10 category Royal 'A' and 'B' defeated Dharmasoka 'A' and Kingswood College 'A' in becoming unbeaten champions while in the Under 16 category Royal 'C' beat Dharmasoka Ambalangoda 'B' to be the unbeaten champions.-MSA

Niluka and Chandrani retain badminton titles
Reigning mens and women's badminton national champions Niluka Karunaratne and Chandrika de Silva retained their titles at the Golden Jubilee Badminton Nationals concluded at the Royal Sports Complex in Reid Avenue yesterday. Third seeded Niluka defeated top seeded Manjula Fernando 15/7, 15/5 while top seeded Chandrika de Silva beat Amali Amarasinghe 11/4,11/6. The nationals was conducted by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association and sponsored by Commercial Bank.

Nilika went on to win a double when he clinched the doubles title partnered by Tharanga Liyanage. Chandrika went a little further winning a triple. Winning the doubles title partnered by former national champion Kaushalee Dissanayake who made a come back after several years and later clinched the mixed doubles partnered by Duminda Jayakody.

Singles - Men's - Niluka Karunaratne beat Manjula Fernando 15/7, 15/5. Womens - Chandrika de Silva beat Amamli Amarasinghe 11/4, 11/6. Kingswood in control
Kingswood were firmly in control at the end of day one in their Division One Inter-School cricket match against Thurstan at Peradeniya. Fourteen-year-old leg spinner Asiri Amarasinghe was the pick of the bowlers and accounted for four victims. Left armer Niroshan Perera also ended with two wickets.

Skipper Wattegedera and Ariyadasa saw the home team through to 67 for 1 by the close. D.Gunaratne and H. Perera entered the 30s for Thurstan but no batsman went on to get a big score.
