Pay more for
mobile phone talk
By Tania Fernando
All mobile phone charges outgoing and incoming calls will be increased
by one rupee a minute from February 1, a spokesman for one of the
cellular companies said.
He said they
had got approval from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission
(TRC) for this increase. The request for the tariff increase was
made a few months ago, but before approval was granted the mobile
operators had gone ahead to announce the increase of call charges.
The TRC then
directed all mobile operators to withdraw an advertisement they
had inserted, informing the public of the increase, stating that
the TRC had not given permission for the increase to be effective.
Meanwhile, a
July date has been set for the introduction of the Calling Party
Pays (CPP) system under which all incoming calls to mobile phones
will be free. But Sri Lanka Telecom and its engineers union are
still opposing this scheme saying it would give an unfair advantage
to mobile phone operators.
