Knight back with a purpose
By Marisa de Silva
Popular radio DJ Jason Knight is back. Not on air anymore, but paving the way for others to get on air. Knight and Capitaln (Niraj Panchalingham) have teamed up and hope to release not only original music but, promote untapped talent as well.

After the successful release of his first album 'Jason Knight', that had only a limited circulation due to his having other work commitments at the time, they hope to release a single every month, or at least every two months. They also have plans to launch an all-girl band soon. However, the debut release of the 'Three Rookies' is one of their current projects.

Rukshan (24), Keshan (16) and Heshan Karunaratne (14), three brothers from Isipathana College, make up the 'Three Rookies'. They are essentially a dance trio who perform at various gigs around the island. However, they are keen to make their debut in the music scene shortly. That is where Knight and Capitaln step in and take over.

"We have to hear their voices and decide what type of music they should specialise in, thereafter we have to create a few numbers that'll suit them and the changing music scene and then let them make their debut in a couple of months time," say the duo.

They create their music in a modern and more westernised manner, they say. They first create a 'loop' (beat) for the song, thus enabling Knight to get inspired and write the lyrics and lastly the basic melody is added on. "It's like a backward process of the norm," says Jason.

Capitaln, together with two friends, released a single some time back, titled, 'Dear 2Pac', dedicated to the late rapper 2Pac Shakur. The unique blend of rap and harmony in the song complements its catchy beat and rhythm. It was aired soon after its release on popular local radio stations and was quite a hit in various radio stations Down Under and in New Zealand too.

'Yahaluwe, Yahaluwe' (six weeks at No. 1 on the SLBC Top of the Charts and Top of the play list in the TV programme 'Heart Beat') one of their originals did well with the local market. Its English version, 'Thinking of You', too caught on quite well. 'Gotta Have You' (1 month as No. 1 on the SLBC Top of the Charts) was yet another hit single to be released by them.

All of the songs feature fresh, new, unprofessional talent, that is yet to hit big time. "I prefer to record on the first take and have spontaneous singing from the heart as opposed to rehearsed singing," says Knight. It gives more depth to the music and the song, he adds.

One such spontaneous work of theirs is, the soon-to-be released single 'Whoozytouch'. "We just set up two mikes and sang to the beat and it was all done within two hours.

It was completely crazy and needs to be perfected but, it was not too bad for a spur of the moment job," says Capitaln. 'Whoozytouch' is mix of Rock and Roll (Elvis style) mixed with rap and ragamuffin style.

It's a completely new blend of music done in free style, which could well be an upcoming chart topper.

They also want to venture out into doing out of the norm Music Videos for their songs. Having already done a couple, they want to go into it full scale, also press their own CDs, create and print their own CD covers etc. - soon.

"Our main aim is to move with the times and not get into one particular style of songs. We want to switch from techno, to hip-hop to R&B to Rock 'n' Roll, whatever the market is into. Otherwise it'll just be a waste of our time and resources," says Knight. "Mainly, we want young talent to venture out into the music world and live up to their fullest potential, then we can truly feel a sense of achievement."
