Pannala
races with new format
By M. Shamil Amit
Motor races for the new year commence with the holding of the Pannala
Motor Races scheduled to be held next Sunday (January 26) at the
newly laid Pannala race track. This will be the second racing meet
to be held at this new track but this time the racing meet which
is organized by the Motor Racing Association (MRA) in collaboration
with the Sri Lanka Racing Riders Association (SLRAA) and the Sri
Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee and sponsored by McFoil a roof
sheet insulation company, have made plans to introduce a new format
replacing the old one to keep in line with international racing
standard.
This event
is a ground breaking event which is being conducted for the first
time in the history of motor racing in Sri Lanka. The new format
the cubic capacity classification system which is used around the
world will replace the old power to weight classification that is
now outdated in conducting motor racing events.
Upali Dassanayake
a former Sri Lanka motor riding champion and the owner of the Pannala
race track is a man of vision. He solely conducted the inaugural
meet which was held at Pannala last year is very optimistic that
the new introduction will bring vast changes and give opportunites
for drivers and riders to compete in international races.
There will
also be another change in conducting events. The organisers have
decided to do away with the practice of conducting motor cycle and
car events alternately. The motor cycle events will be worked off
first which will be from 10.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m and motor car events
will start at 12.30 p.m. and finish around 3.30 p.m. Upali said
if the races are held alternately the motor cyclists are at a disadvantage
as splilled oil and dirt from the cars make difficult for riders
to ride with that the quality of racing goes down.
The track which
has been developed further with the assistance of McFoil for the
coming races. Upali further said that he has made plans to conduct
races at Pannala every two months which is a need if the new format
is to be implemented fully. Dilantha Malagamuwa, Sri Lanka's successful
international representative abroad will be also particpating at
this meet. Dilantha who is based in Japan is due to specially fly
down to take part in this meet.
