SLMM
to check Tiger police
By Shelani Perera
The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission will take up with LTTE the issue
of the Tigers' interference in law enforcement in government-controlled
areas in the North and East.
SLMM deputy
chief Hagrup Hauckland said the issue would be taken up when outgoing
SLMM Chief Trond Furuhovde meets LTTE's political wing leader S.P.
Thamilselvan on Tuesday and eastern military leader Karuna on Thursday.
He said reports of LTTE interference in law enforcement had been
received from Mannar, Vauvniya, Batticaloa and Trincomalee.
"The LTTE
won't allow the police to carry out their duty. This is a serious
problem as it affects the security and normalcy in the area,"
Mr. Hauckland said. The complaints relate to investigations being
carried out by the LTTE on land disputes, money transactions and
other matters in government-controlled areas.
Reports from
the east said LTTE interference in government-controlled areas has
increased after it set up courts and police stations. Maj. Gen.
Furuhovde is also expected to take up continuing complaints about
child abduction and recruitment by the LTTE.
Meanwhile,
the ICRC's outgoing Trincomalee representative, Lina Milner, said
they were probing complaints of child abductions by armed groups. |
